The City of Missing Shadows
A place of narrow, winding tunnels and caves carefully propped up with chunks of shaped synth and metal, the Bauble Mines wind deep into the belly of the southernmost peak of the Black Riage. Where most mines are lit only by the light brought in with the miners, these mines are littered with glowing baubles – misshapen ones discarded by the baublers in many places, other areas with the numenera relics still partly buried in the walls.
The Bauble Mines are abandoned by men, but home to all manner of strange creatures who are said to answer to the mysterious Eyeman who is said to dwell in the deepest reaches of the mines. Everyone knows a friend who had a friend who saw the Eyeman, but no direct witnesses can be found.
The mines are supposedly closed due to the sheer number of blue baubles dug out of the mines, collapsing their value to near worthlessness. Some whispered rumors suggest other reasons, however – of some kind of numenera device uncovered in the depths, or of mutations springing up in those who dug too deeply. A few even whisper that in the very deepest point in the mines, there is a rift to some other world where a monstrous creature is slowly trying to claw its way into the Ninth World, and that the mines were closed up to keep anyone from helping it escape.
